The Savelugu Municipal Assembly has reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive development, improved service delivery, and accountable governance as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Alhassan Fuseini, presented a comprehensive account of achievements and ongoing interventions during the 1st Ordinary Meeting of the 2nd Session of the 9th Assembly held on Thursday, May 14, 2026. Addressing Assembly Members, traditional authorities, heads of departments, security agencies, and stakeholders, the MCE expressed gratitude for their continued support towards the development of the Municipality.
Hon. Fuseini stated that the Municipality continues to enjoy relative peace across the four Zonal Councils of Savelugu, Moglaa, Pong-Tamale, and Diare, attributing the calm atmosphere to the cooperation between security agencies, traditional authorities, and residents. He, however, raised serious concern over the increasing abuse of illicit drugs, especially tramadol and Indian hemp among the youth, stressing that the Assembly was collaborating with security agencies to combat the menace while calling on the courts to impose stronger deterrent sanctions on offenders.
On social welfare and community development, the MCE disclosed that through collaboration between the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) Programme and the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), a total of 7,350 vulnerable persons across 18 communities were successfully registered and renewed onto the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). He described the intervention as a major step toward ensuring access to healthcare for vulnerable residents.
He further revealed that the Assembly had supported 136 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) through the 5% District Assembly Common Fund allocation for PWDs. The support package included livestock, tricycles, deep freezers, sewing and hairdressing machines, start-up capital, medication support, soap-making training, and financial assistance for participation in PWD programmes. According to him, monitoring visits conducted after the disbursement confirmed that many beneficiaries were making meaningful progress in improving their livelihoods.
As part of efforts to address rising substance abuse, the Assembly organised sensitization programmes in Kukobila, Tamalegu, and Savelugu M/A Junior High School, reaching more than 280 participants including students, teachers, chiefs, community members, and persons with disabilities. The MCE stressed the need for traditional authorities and opinion leaders to join the campaign against drug abuse in the Municipality.
Hon. Fuseini also announced the successful resolution of a paternity case involving Madam Rahina Osman after DNA verification at the Tamale Tribunal Court confirmed the respondent as the biological father, leading to a court order compelling him to assume full financial responsibility for the child. He noted that the intervention reflected the Assembly’s commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of vulnerable women and children.
Touching on education, the MCE disclosed that the Assembly invested GH₵10,000 in teacher training programmes aimed at improving teaching and learning outcomes across the Municipality. He further reported that the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) was conducted peacefully and successfully monitored, while the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) would continue to receive close supervision.

This important intervention is aimed at restoring the dam’s capacity, which has been significantly reduced over the years due to siltation. By dredging the dam, the Assembly seeks to ensure a reliable water source for dry-season farming, livestock, and other socio-economic activities that depend on it.
Speaking during an inspection of the project, Hon. Bagaman emphasized the Assembly’s commitment to enhancing food security and improving livelihoods across communities. He noted that the dredging exercise will not only boost irrigation farming but also create opportunities for local farmers to increase productivity throughout the year.
He further assured residents of the Assembly’s dedication to investing in critical infrastructure that directly impacts their well-being. Community members expressed appreciation for the initiative, describing it as timely and beneficial to the development of Laligu and its surrounding areas.
