The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Savelugu, Hon. Alhassan Fuseini, has taken a significant step towards addressing sanitation challenges and promoting sustainable development in the Northern Region through a strategic partnership with Trentino Ambiens, an Italian waste management company, for the establishment of a modern waste treatment plant in Savelugu.
The initiative, which originated from the Savelugu Municipal Assembly under the leadership of Hon. Alhassan Fuseini, seeks to revolutionize waste management in the area by converting waste into valuable resources such as gas and electricity. The project is expected to serve not only Savelugu Municipality but also neighboring districts including Nanton, Kumbungu, Karaga, and parts of the Tamale Metropolis.
Driven by a vision to improve environmental sanitation and create sustainable energy solutions, Hon. Alhassan Fuseini led efforts to prepare and submit a formal proposal to Trentino Ambiens in Italy, seeking support for the acquisition and establishment of the waste treatment facility. The proposal highlighted the growing need for an efficient waste management system capable of addressing sanitation concerns while creating economic opportunities for local communities.
Prior to engaging the Italian company, the Savelugu Municipal Assembly, under the stewardship of Hon. Alhassan Fuseini, passed a resolution during a General Assembly meeting approving the acquisition of the waste treatment plant. The resolution reflected the Assembly’s commitment to finding innovative and long-term solutions to waste management challenges confronting the municipality and surrounding districts.
Following the Assembly’s approval, Hon. Alhassan Fuseini spearheaded a series of engagements between officials of the Savelugu Municipal Assembly and representatives of Trentino Ambiens. The discussions focused on the technical, operational, and financial aspects of the project, culminating in an invitation for a Ghanaian delegation to visit Italy for further consultations and the formalization of the partnership.
Recognizing the transformative potential of the project, the Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Ali Adolf John, joined efforts to support the initiative and subsequently led a high-powered delegation to Italy. The delegation included Hon. Alhassan Fuseini, the Savelugu Municipal Coordinating Director, the Municipal Director of Planning, the District Chief Executive for Nanton, Hon. Abdul Rahman Zenabu Rosina, and the Nanton District Coordinating Director.
During the visit, Hon. Alhassan Fuseini actively participated in a series of meetings with officials of Trentino Ambiens, where detailed discussions were held on the implementation framework, expected benefits, and sustainability of the proposed waste treatment plant. The engagements provided valuable insights into the company’s waste-to-energy technology and its potential impact on the Northern Region.
A major milestone of the visit was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ghanaian delegation and Trentino Ambiens. Hon. Alhassan Fuseini signed the agreement on behalf of the Savelugu Municipal Assembly, reaffirming the municipality’s commitment to the successful implementation of the project. The Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Ali Adolf John, signed on behalf of the regional authorities, while the District Chief Executive for Nanton, Hon. Abdul Rahman Zenabu Rosina, signed on behalf of the Nanton District Assembly.
Speaking after the signing ceremony, Hon. Alhassan Fuseini expressed optimism about the prospects of the project, describing it as a game-changing intervention that will significantly improve sanitation standards, create employment opportunities, and contribute to sustainable energy production within the municipality and beyond.
According to the MCE, the facility will receive and process waste generated from Savelugu, Nanton, Kumbungu, Karaga, and parts of Tamale. Through modern waste treatment technology, the plant will convert waste into gas and electricity, helping to reduce environmental pollution while contributing to local economic development.
Hon. Alhassan Fuseini noted that beyond addressing waste management concerns, the project aligns with the government’s broader agenda of promoting environmental sustainability, improving public health, and fostering green industrialization. He emphasized that the project will position Savelugu as a leader in innovative waste management practices in Ghana.
As part of the next phase of implementation, a technical team from Trentino Ambiens is expected to visit Savelugu in July 2026 to inspect the proposed project site and undertake the necessary assessments required for commencement of the project. The visit will pave the way for detailed planning and eventual construction of the facility.
The Savelugu MCE expressed gratitude to the Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Ali Adolf John, for his unwavering support and leadership throughout the engagement process, as well as to all stakeholders who contributed to the successful signing of the MoU.
The establishment of the waste treatment plant is expected to become one of the most significant environmental and energy projects in the Northern Region. Through the leadership of Hon. Alhassan Fuseini and the collaborative efforts of local and international partners, the project promises to deliver lasting benefits in sanitation, energy generation, job creation, and environmental sustainability for the people of Savelugu and the wider Northern Region.
